Discounts are available for multiple years of registration.
What about other domain extensions?
We can register any domain extension, but pricing varies depending on the extension. Please inquire for details.
Where do you register domains?
We register the majority of client domain names on Dreamhost, Netfirms or GoDaddy. We choose the registrar based on your anticipated future needs for the website.
Who owns the domain name, White Crossroads or the client?
The client. Always. We register all domain names with our client as the Registrant and Administrative Contact, and with us as the Technical and Billing Contact. When we register a domain for you, we facilitate the purchase and setup of the domain, connect the domain to your host, setup emails and so forth. But we don't own it - you do. We just manage it on your behalf.
This is important, because many web design firms simply register the domains. When we register a domain, it defaults to us as the registrant and owner. But at White Crossroads, we strongly believe that clients have a proprietary right to their own domain name, and we are happy to provide access to it for you at any time. The same goes for hosting. Full access, FTP information and file backups are available at any time - you only need to ask.
What if I already have a domain name? Can I still host my site with you?
Yes. If you have log on information to your current domain registrar, we can help you with a hosting account, emails, domain configuration - anything you need.
Can you transfer my existing domain name to or from another registrar?
Yes. So long as you have access to your domain name. If you don't, we can help you get access. Our normal domain transfer price is $40, and includes 1 additional year of domain registration (for .com, .net and .org domains). If, however, you don't have access to your domain name, our normal transfer price is $100 and includes our cooperation with your previous registrar, tracking down logons, access and people... faxing documents back and forth and so on. It's lots of fun, but we take care of it for you.
In general, our domain transfer prices also include hosting transfers with the purchase of a hosting account. There are some pricing exceptions, such as Joomla sites, E-commerce sites or sites with custom databases or specific coding languages. We will discuss any such exceptions with you ahead of time and make sure you are fully informed.
An odd snippet: we're one of the only firms in the greater Fort Myers, FL area that transfers Joomla sites. Tricky things, website transfers! But we're quite familiar with them, and happy to help!
What's the distinction between a Domain Name and Hosting? Why do I need both?
A domain name is just the website name - www.yourbusinessname.com. Most folks buy domain names so that they can turn them into their website. Some folks buy domains just to save them for later, for some future project or purpose. And some folks buy domain names to "park" on them, where they place advertising and get paid when someone else clicks on the advertising. But a domain name is just a name - you need hosting in order to make a domain name into a website. A host is the physical server on which the files that make up your website exist. The domain name "points" to the host, so when someone types your website name into a browser like Internet Explorer or Firefox, the browser knows which host to go to in order to load the files for your website. No host, no website. No domain, no website. They go together.
